The images [in this serie] show an activity brought about by the very nature of a Polaroid. As an instant image, it allowed […] both photographer and subject to observe the result of a shot almost immediately, well before the digital era. […] Among amateurs, as shown in the collection put together by Jérôme Simon, it was a kind of exchange or potlatch: I take your image, then I offer it to you. But, not to lose by the exchange, I take another image of you as you look at yourself, as you watch the image rise, appear, reveal itself, reveal yourself. […] We recognise in this group of photographs the figure of Narcissus, of course, but also the psychoanalytic concept of the mirror stage. In other words, and although most of the subjects here are adults, with the Polaroid, the Ego is social and constructed in the gaze of the other.

Les images [de cette série] révèlent une activité induite par la nature même du Polaroid. Étant une image instantanée, il permettait […] au photographe comme au sujet, bien avant l’ère numérique, de constater très rapidement le résultat de la prise de vue. […] Dans un usage amateur, ce que dévoile la collection réunie par Jérôme Simon est une forme d’échange, de potlatch : je prends ton image, puis je te l’offre. Mais, pour ne pas être perdant, je prends une autre image de toi tandis que tu te contemples, que tu regardes la précédente monter, apparaître, se révéler, te révéler. […] On retrouve bien entendu dans cet ensemble de photographies la figure de Narcisse, mais aussi le concept psychanalytique de stade du miroir. 
Autrement dit, et même si la plupart des sujets sont ici adultes, par le Polaroid, le « je » est social et se construit dans le regard de l’autre.
